Filamentational instability of partially coherent femtosecond optical pulses in air.
The filamentational instability of spatially broadband femtosecond optical pulses in air is investigated by means of a kinetic wave equation for spatially incoherent photons. An explicit expression for the spatial amplification rate is derived and analyzed. It is found that the spatial spectral broadening of the pulse can lead to stabilization of the filamentation instability. Thus optical smoo...
متن کاملShaping quantum pulses of light via coherent atomic memory.
We describe proof-of-principle experiments demonstrating a novel approach for generating pulses of light with controllable photon numbers, propagation direction, timing, and pulse shapes. The approach is based on preparation of an atomic ensemble in a state with a desired number of atomic spin excitations, which is later converted into a photon pulse. Spatiotemporal control over the pulses is o...
متن کاملFemtosecond Laser Pulses and Pulse Shaping
The experiments in this thesis have been performed using femtosecond laser pulses at different wavelengths. The second and third harmonic of of the fundamental output (800 nm) of a commercial laser have been used in several experiments. In other experiments laser pulses in the visible were required. A homebuilt non-collinear optical parametric amplifier (NOPA) has been used to generate tunable ...
متن کاملSolid state coherent transient measurements using hard optical pulses
An isolated and spectrally narrow absorptive feature is prepared via a novel spectral hole burning process in an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition in Eu(3+):Y(2)SiO5. With the narrow feature it is shown that it is feasible to apply complex optical pulse sequences analogous to rf pulse sequences used extensively in NMR.
متن کاملMultibeam second-harmonic generation by spatiotemporal shaping of femtosecond pulses.
We present a technique for efficient generation of the second-harmonic signal at several points of a nonlinear crystal simultaneously. Multispot operation is performed by using a diffractive optical element that splits the near-infrared light of a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser into an arbitrary array of beams that are transformed into an array of foci at the nonlinear crystal. We show that, for...
